12thirteen is an ambitious, nimble design studio obsessed with helping not-for-profits, small businesses and the public sector transform our world and our future through effective, inspiring and healthy design.

12thirteen Design Inc. was founded by Randal Boutilier, a graduate of York University’s Faculty of Fine Arts. Upon graduation, Randal started freelance design in 2000 while working at a small design studio and print shop. In 2003, due to demand, Randal established 12thirteen Design, and developed a client base that has steadily grown by word-of-mouth, thanks in large part to a strong working relationship with organizations within the fine arts and not-for-profit communities.

In 2009, as demand for online communications grew, Shelley Williams joined the studio to handle the ever-developing realm of web design and social media. In 2010, 12thirteen Design was incorporated, and Vichai Thienapirak was added to the team, bringing a fresh perspective and an illustrative hand to the studio’s offerings. In 2014, Orane Anderson arrived on 12thirteen’s doorstep with ideas to help firm up our studio’s management. In 2016, Corey Nokham brought his experience with both print and digital media to extend 12thirteen’s reach into photography and motion graphics.

12thirteen has deliberately focused on the design needs of the public and not-for-profit sectors. We thrive on helping good organizations make good things happen.

We ask all the right questions to develop a clear brief and start each project with shared vision, expectations, goals and budget. We keep you informed and comfortable at every step.

It’s that certain something, that special way everything comes together unexpectedly and organically. That’s the magic of good design and 12thirteen has spent a decade cultivating and refining it through a deliberate and collaborative process.

As not-for-profit specialists, we understand there are many stakeholders for your project and we see each level of approval as a focus group to ensure their needs are met. We’re fortunate to have worked with every level of stakeholders. That experience helps us ensure a smooth design process for your projects.

The audience should recognize your brand, not the 12thirteen style. We balance creative presence with consistent visual standards. By welcoming your feedback and constantly evaluating our work, we’re able to build on strengths and address opportunities for improvement.
